About Mahalaya

Mahalaya, meaning love and freedom, is a community newspaper founded in 2022. Powered by a staff of dedicated volunteers, this free publication centers the voices and experiences of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the United States through solidarity reporting.

We build on the legacy of previous Filipino and Filipino American community newspapers driven by immigrants, students, and journalists who were actively engaged in community organizing, the arts, and labor movements throughout the diaspora. We believe journalism is activism and a tool for holding individuals, institutions, and systems accountable. 

With a commitment to solidarity reporting and community-centered journalism, Mahalaya provides reliable, in-depth coverage of Filipino and Filipino American communities and the issues that impact their lives.
